 APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR

The Council of the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) seeks to appoint a full-time Director to succeed Hilary Callan from 1st October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is an exciting opportunity for an appointee to build on the RAI’s established record of furthering and promoting anthropology in its broadest and most inclusive sense. Applicants should have demonstrable administrative, management and financial skills, be experienced in working in a membership organisational setting with a staff and committees, and with a variety of stakeholders, including universities, NGOs, museums, the media and the general public. All candidates should have some level of anthropological background and training.

Wellcome Medal 2008

WELLCOME MEDAL FOR MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, 2008

We are delighted to announce that the 2008 Medal has been awarded jointly to Professor Ron Barrett of Emory University, USA and Professor Joao Biehl of Princeton University, USA for their respective books Aghora Medicine: Pollution, Death and Healing in Northern India (published by University of California Press) and The Will to Live: AIDS Therapies and the Politics of Survival (published by Princeton University Press).

The Wellcome Medal is awarded every 2 years by the Wellcome Trust, on the recommendation of judges appointed by the RAI. The competition for the 2010 award is now open. For details go to Prizes.

 

New JRAI Honorary Editor

JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE: APPOINTMENT OF NEW HONORARY EDITOR

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Matthew Engelke, Senior Lecturer in anthropology at the LSE, as Honorary Editor of the JRAI to serve for the three academic years 2010 to 2013.  Dr Engelke succeeds Professor Simon Coleman, who completes his term of office in September 2010.

 

RAI Film Festival 2011 Call for Offers to Host

The 12th RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film will take place in summer/autumn 2011.  Offers are now invited from Anthropology Departments in the UK and Ireland and other bodies interested in hosting this event.

The RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film is held biennially, and is recognised as a major international event. Host institutions in the past have included Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, University of Oxford, University of Durham, University of Kent at Canterbury, Goldsmiths College and SOAS (London). All are welcome to submit offers, including previous hosts.
