The Committee is established by the RAI Council and reports to it. Its mandate is to promote the institutional and intellectual engagement of anthropology with areas of medicine and health; and to further the development of medical anthropology in its broadest and most inclusive interpretation. The Committee advises Council on policies and actions to these ends.

Members of the Committee are selected as individuals on the basis of their capacity to contribute to the Committee’s work, taking into account its needs for a balance of knowledge, experience, region and institutional affiliation across its field. They are appointed by the Chair, normally in consultation with, and with the agreement of, the current Committee. There is no fixed term of service, but the Chair is empowered to suggest to inactive members that they may wish to step down.
