SEMINAR SERIES AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM'S ANTHROPOLOGY LIBRARY AND RESEARCH CENTRE

Writing the Dark Side of Travel / Thanotourism: Case Studies in Travel to the Dark Side

Thursday 18 May at 10.00 am (tea & coffee served from 9.30 am)

Anthropology Library and Research Centre, British Museum

THIS IS A FREE EVENT

The British Museum’s Anthropology Library and Research Centre, in conjunction with the Royal Anthropological Institute, is pleased to present ‘Reviewer meets Reviewed’, a discussion between Dr Jonathan Skinner, author of Writing the Dark Side of Travel, and Dr Tony Johnston, author of Thanotourism: Case Studies in Travel to the Dark Side.  In a departure from normal arrangements, this will be a double header where each speaker will review the other’s book

‘Thanotourism: Case Studies in Travel to the Dark Side’ is an important new overview of a growing field. It introduces more rigorous scholarship, new philosophical perspectives and a wealth of empirical material on the contemporary and historical consumption of death with case studies designed to stretch and challenge current discourse.

‘Writing the Dark Side of Travel’ takes an ethnographic and interdisciplinary approach to explore the writings and texts of dark journeys and travels. In travelling over the dead, amongst the dying, and alongside the suffering, the authors give a tour of humanity’s violence and misery. And yet, from this dark side, there comes great beauty and poignancy in the characterisation of plight.
