The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) was established by the UK Government in 2016 to support collaborative research that addresses global development challenges and improves the economic prosperity, welfare and quality of life of people living in Development Assistance Committee (DAC)-listed countries. Other University based research programmes have received funding directly from the Government as part of the UK’s Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) commitment. Combining development objectives with academic research, these funding streams have allowed scholars based in the UK to collaborate with partners in the Global South to make leading contributions to major international initiatives including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This webinar offers an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved by different ODA funded programmes, and to consider the transformative potential, and limits, of this model of applied research collaboration.
