Food Connections:
Production, Exchange and Consumption in West African Migration

Dr Maria Abranches (University of East Anglia)

with
Prof Emma Gilberthorpe (University of East Anglia) as chair
Dr Michelle C. Johnson  (Bucknell University) as discussant

Food and migration are two central domains in West African economic and social life. Surprisingly, however, they have rarely been examined in combination in anthropological studies of Africa or African migration. Food Connections offers a unique understanding of the effects of food movement from its production sites in West Africa to its final spaces of consumption in Europe. By ethnographically following that movement and the close-knit community of food producers, traders, consumers and a wide range of small intermediaries in Guinea-Bissau and in Portugal, the book unveils important meanings and practices of food that are materialised in the various phases of the movement, and the connections that transnational processes of food production, exchange and consumption generate between two lifeworlds.

The book is published by Berghahn Books and can be purchased here: https://www.berghahnbooks.com/title/AbranchesFood
Berghahn is kindly offering a special discount for the book to event attendees, which we will share during the event.
