RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

The Political Economy of 'Applied Anthropology': Cases of tourism development in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Palestine, and Ethiopia.

Professor Tom Selwyn, SOAS

Wednesday 12 March at 5.30 pm

This seminar will reflect on some of the political, intellectual, and ethical issues raised in the context of participation by anthropologists in policy related research or 'applied anthropology'. Examples of such work will be taken from the the seminar giver's work (for the European Commission and DfiD) in this field in the countries named in the title. The presenter will introduce a discussion on such questions as (a) can anthropologists avoid 'taking sides' when working with contentious issues in areas of conflict? (b) Should 'applied anthropology' be part of the 'mainstream' of courses taught in anthropology departments? (c) What relation does contemporary 'applied anthropology' have to some of the basic issues raised by our anthropological forebears?

This event is free, but tickets must be booked.  To book tickets please go to http://selwyn.eventbrite.co.uk.
