Measuring impact outside academia: Reflecting on REF 2021

Speakers

Dr Magnus Course (University of Edinburgh)
Prof David Mosse (SOAS, University of London)

and Dr Gerhard Anders (University of Edinburgh) as chair

The publication of the results of the Research Excellence Framework(REF) 2021 in May triggered the usual debates about scores and rankings in Britain’s Higher Education sector. REF 2021 placed heavy emphasis on measuring research impact outside academia. Researchers and knowledge exchange professionals worked intensively over several years on ‘impact case studies' to contribute to change in the economy, society, culture and public services. As the UK’s four higher education funding bodies are currently evaluating research assessment through the Future Research Assessment Programme, this Anthropology Communicates event aims to explore the future of assessing impact of anthropological research in particular.

The Royal Anthropological Institute’s Anthropology of Policy and Practice Committee would like to invite researchers, practitioners and knowledge exchange professionals to take a step back from discussions about scores and rankings to reflect on more fundamental questions about the process of curating impact case studies and their effect on researchers and partners who provided evidence of impact. How did the REF shape the engagement and relationships with partners beyond academia? What type of evidence did it generate and does this evidence adequately reflect the impact of anthropological research? How can we better communicate the impact of anthropological and qualitative research in future research assessments?
