Alagba: a Water Spirit Masquerade

For the Kalabari people of the Niger Delta, Alagba is the most important of a cycle of masquerades belonging to the water spirits. A dancer from each clan house follows the instructions of the drum to approach the spirit shrines in the town square. Sokari Douglas Camp, a Nigerian woman sculptor who lives in London, explores her family's cultural roots through participation in the 1994 masquerade festivals of the Kalabari of southeastern Nigeria. The religious, artistic, and other cultural aspects of the Kalabari masquerade are examined in detail, with live scenes from the festivals at Buguma, near Port Harcourt, and interviews with the historian Robin Horton and other members of the all-male Ekine Society.
