Uncertain Vision: Birt, Dyke and the Reinvention of the BBC

When: Thursday, November 12th 2009 at 10am (tea and coffee from 9:30)
Where: Centre for Anthropology, British Museum

The British Museum’s Centre for Anthropology, in collaboration with the Royal Anthropological Institute, will be continuing its series of encounters between authors and their reviewers with a seminar discussion between Prof. Georgina Born, author of Uncertain Vision, and Dr. Michael Stewart, who reviewed the work for JRAI.

Uncertain Vision presents the findings of the most extensive independent research ever conducted inside the BBC. Focusing on the major reforms the corporation underwent in the later 1990s, it presents an intimate account of the world of public service broadcasting. Blending reportage and cultural history, it offers both a panorama of the BBC's history and an intimate portrait of the people that make it up. In addition to addressing the future of a major cultural institution, Born’s work raises important considerations for corporate ethnography and anthropological engagement with the mass media.
