We record with regret the death of William Archer, OBE, Keeper Emeritus, Indian Section, Victoria and Albert Museum, and formerly Editor of Man in India. His many publications include a number of authoritative books on Indian painting; a painting from his collection of Indian popular art was illustrated on the front page of RAIN 29, December 1978. He was born in 1907 and served for 18 years with the ICS before joining the V and A. He is survived by his widow, the art historian Dr Mildred Archer.
