From the Atlantic Rainforest to the Chaco: can conservationists work with anthropologists, and with indigenous communities?

John Burton, will describe his personal experiences and the problems of working with indigenous communities from the perspective of a wildlife conservationist. Despite serious criticisms of conservationists by some social anthropologists, he suggests that wildlife conservationists often share common objectives with indigenous and other local communities, but compromise on both sides is often essential. After 10 years of negotiation he recently signed a ground-breaking agreement in the Mata Atlantica of Argentina. Other examples of work with indigenous groups in India and Zambia will also be discussed briefly. With an interest in ethnographic collecting, he will also bring a collection from the Indian communities of the Chaco (Ayoreo, Nivacle, and Chamacoco) and Mata Atlantica (Ache and Guarani) of Paraguay.
