Socioeconomics and the supernatural amongst the Miskitu and Ulwa of eastern Nicaragua

This seminar considers in comparative terms the relationships between socioeconomic processes, misfortune and belief in supernatural agency amongst the people of two superficially rather similar villages in eastern Nicaragua populated principally by Miskitu speakers. In one (Kakabila) where subsistence farming and fishing predominate, the causes of misfortune are generally projected outside the village onto ghosts and other supernatural beings. In the other (Karawala) where subsistence depends principally on uncertain and irregular bouts of employment, misfortune is more often attributed to human sorcerers from within the community.
