Paradise Bent: Boys will be Girls in Samoa (1999) (TBC)
Documentary / Cert. Exempt/ 51 minutes
A documentary about the fa’afafine lifestyle, their history and role in Samoan society. Fa’afafine translates into “in the manner of a woman” and refers to boys who take on domestic roles in their households. It’s a pretty widely accepted practice in Samoa, with two to three fa’afafines in some large families. Dir. Heather Croall.

Codebreaker (2011)
Documentary/ Cert. Exempt / 81 minutes
The highs and lows of Alan Turing’s life, tracking his extraordinary accomplishments, his government persecution through to his tragic death in 1954. This film features interviews with contemporary experts from the world of technology, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. These contributors bring Turing’s exciting impact up to the present day, explaining why, in many ways, modern technology has only just begun to explore the potential of Turing’s ideas. Dir. Clare Beavan, Nic Stacey

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin (2003)
Documentary/ Cert. Exempt / 84 minutes
An eye-opening documentary about the most sophisticated and charismatic of the civil rights leaders, enhanced by insights about why he became the most neglected. Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) helped to school Martin Luther King in pacifism—and persuaded him at an early stage not to own guns. Ultimately Rustin was driven to the margins of the movement for being outspokenly gay and refusing (on tactical grounds) to oppose the war in Vietnam http://rustin.org/ Dir. Nancy Kates and Bennett Singer
The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Bennett Singer – director of the ‘Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin’ and consulting producer of ‘The Codebreaker’ – 16.15-17.15
