Subjects as Objects: how heritage practice works with the past
Dr Tom Yarrow, Durham University
Wednesday 20 May at 5.30 pm
Based on ethnographic research with Historic Scotland, the government heritage agency, this paper considers how the historic environment is produced. Focusing on the process by which historic buildings are ‘listed’, it considers how designations of historic significance emerge through specific interactions between people, places and buildings. Against the grain of recent deconstructive critiques of heritage, the paper draws out the various ways in which objectivity is situated as an internally contested ideal.
