RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR
SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
Why Music Is Everywhere (and why we need it to be)
Bill Barclay, Director of Music, Shakespeare’s Globe
Wednesday 25 October at 5.30 pm
How can we leverage humankind’s anthropological need for music over the entertainment sector and into creativity, learning, consensus, and expression? Never before has it been so clear how much the world leans on music to entrain experience. We hear it in all our films, coffee houses, elevators, commercials and devices. Besides a marketing tool, why is music necessary? And if we are all experts at our own musical taste, why is music making still an exclusionary skill? How can we understand music’s true power and role to heal, to build consensus, to generate eventfulness, to concretize memory, and to benefit other non-musical sectors?
