RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Indigenous Australia in British museums: the relational museum as practice

Dr Lissant Bolton (British Museum), Dr Gaye Sculthorpe (British Museum) and Prof Howard Morphy (Australian National University)

Wednesday 16 October at 5.30 pm

This seminar is a reflection on an ongoing research project, The Relational Museum and its Objects, that is developing a hub and spokes model to link distributed collections of Indigenous Australian material culture held in institutions with source communities in Australia. The project is a collaboration between the British Museum and the National Museum of Australia, in partnership with the Australian National University, to explore whether relational hubs can be developed across the globe that productively link collections, individuals and communities together.

We will present our preliminary conclusions and thoughts about future possibilities, taking into account the different communities of interest.
The seminar will discuss some objects that have come to light as a result of our research. These reveal the complex and often difficult relationships between Indigenous Australians and British people and institutions, as well as being powerful conduits for telling that history anew, in ways that seek to challenge and rework its legacies.
