The issue proposes a comparative analytic, called ‘religious suasion’, for clarifying the stakes of diverse religious actors’ ideologies and practices of influence. The point is to look beyond rhetoric and discursive messaging to provide both broader and deeper analytical affordances in the study of interested communication. Across six ethnographic essays, the issue critically interrogates the Christian theological specificity of terms like ‘missionization’ and ‘evangelization’, as well as the limitations of relying on negatively valanced terms like ‘proselytization’.
