Learning from Women in Afghanistan

Veronica will perform some of the traditional women’s music that she learnt in Afghanistan in the 1970s. Between 1973-7 she and her husband the ethnomusicologist John Baily spent two years in the city of Herat, during which time she undertook research on women’s expressive culture. From 1975-1983 Veronica was an informal participant in the intellectual life of Professor John Blacking’s Department of Social Anthropology at The Queen’s University of Belfast, and her Afghan fieldwork resulted in a narrative ethnography, Three Women of Herat (1988). She will describe her process of learning to perform the local music, and how it offered her privileged access to the activities and preoccupations of Afghan women.
