RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR
SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
Fürer-Haimendorf’s early academic career: A case study in exploring methodologies for the history of anthropology
Professor Andre Gingrich, University of Vienna
Wednesday 4 November at 5.30 pm
This seminar will discuss various methods in elaborating the history of anthropology, such as genealogies of ideas, network analysis, institutional history, and – as an often underrated dimension – transdisciplinary interactions and influences. It will do so by looking at the early career of one of the RAI’s presidents: Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1975/77). This seminar covers his career as an anthropology student, and then as assistant professor at Vienna University in the 1930’s. During that period, he also carried out his first fieldwork in the Naga hills and spent an academic semester at LSE.
