RAI Research Seminar: Andrée Grau

October 29 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Dance, ethnomusicology, anthropology: Same difference?

Professor Andrée Grau, University of Roehampton

Wednesday 29 October at 5.30 pm

The seminar will look at the relation between dance and ethnomusicology, and dance and anthropology. The anthropologist and ethnomusicologist John Blacking (1928-1990) saw ethnomusicology and the anthropology of dance as branches of social-anthropology whose chief area of study was the expressive, social movements of bodies in time and space. The seminar will examine to what extent this approach was accepted within anthropology and how much overlap there is between ethnomusicology and the anthropology of dance since in many societies dance and music are not seen as distinct entities. It will also engage with new trends in the field and the search towards a non-hegemonic anthropology (of dance).
