RAI RESEARCH SEMINAR

SEMINAR SERIES AT THE ROYAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Globalization of Anthropology and the Creation of the WAU, World Anthropological Union

Junji Koizumi
International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences
Osaka University and the National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU)

Monday 03 February at 5.30 pm

The Globalization of anthropological studies in terms of differentiated plural “anthropologies” appeared around the turn of century. It took a definite form when WCAA (World Council of Anthropological Associations) was founded in Brazil in 2004. WCAA now holds 54 member associations including most of the major ones across the world. Before WCAA, IUAES (International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences) was the only truly international organization, holding its Congresses all around the world since 1934. Negotiation between IUAES and WCAA for closer collaboration started in 2013 and culminated in the inauguration of a bicameral organization named WAU (World Anthropological Union) in 2018.
Under WAU, IUAES and WCAA are now capable of working together as a united entity and speaking in one voice for world anthropologies. However, this is not the end of a successful process but the beginning of a difficult one. We need to create a synergy between the two chambers utilizing newly available resources of each chamber and materializing WAU’s potentials and possibilities which may perhaps be unprecedented.
