Seminar: Alan Greaves

September 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Joint seminar with the Anglo-Turkish Society

Thursday 19 September 2019 at 6.00pm

at the Royal Anthropological Institute

Speaker: Dr Alan Greaves, University of Liverpool

John Garstang and Turkey

John Garstang of Liverpool University was a pioneer of Turkish archaeology and the founder of the British Institute at Ankara. His book The Land of the Hittites(1910) not only laid the foundations for the entire field of Hittite historical geography, it also played a role in the negotiations that led to the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

Another part of Garstang’s legacy, which was unknown until recently, is his extensive photographic archives –comprising thousands of glass plate negatives housed in the University of Liverpool. These have now been digitised and restored and reveal a fascinating insight into the landscapes and peoples of late Ottoman Turkey.

This lecture will discuss Garstang’s long relationship with Turkey, its archaeology, its people and its politics as he carefully navigated his way between the colonial powers of the British and Ottoman Empires in pursuit of knowledge.

Dr Alan M. Greaves is Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the British Institute in Ankara and has directed several archaeological projects across Turkey, most recently at Çaltılar near Fethiye. He has published four books and nearly a hundred articles on Turkish archaeology and ancient history. In 2015 he curated a major photographic exhibition in Istanbul John Garstang’s Footsteps across Anatolia and accompanying exhibition catalogue, using images from the Liverpool archives.
