Call for Presentations!

The Royal Anthropological Institute will be holding another of its popular Photo Salons on Monday 11th May 2026 at 5pm, at 50 Fitzroy Street, London.

This is a chance for students and academic staff to present their current work on photography and to socialise with like-minded scholars.

We are looking for short, snappy presentations (5 minutes). Presentations might be archivally based, looking at the history of anthropology’s relationship to photography, or they might focus on your own documentary or creative use of the camera. They might celebrate photography’s power to record fleeting moments and explore the ‘optical unconscious’, or they might be troubled by the ethics of making visible practices whose opacity should be respected.

We encourage a diversity of approaches and treatments and particularly welcome work that stimulates debate.

If you would like to propose a presentation, please send a single PowerPoint slide and a paragraph long description of the theme of your presentation to archives@therai.org.uk by 12 April 2026. We cannot take online presentation proposals. Proposals will be notified by 20 April.

And please mark the date in your diaries!
