Margaret Mead, an Honorary Fellow of the RAI and one of the most influential of all anthropologists, died on 15 November in New York. She was born in 1901 and was awarded many high honours during her career. Of her three husbands, two were distinguished anthropologists, Dr Reo F. Fortune and Dr Gregory Bateson. Her death on the first morning of the American Anthropological Association’s Annual Meeting in Los Angeles occasioned several tributes at plenary sessions.
