SOCIETIES UNDER STRESS

University of Sussex 28-30 July 2027

CLOSING DATE FOR PROPOSALS 1st DECEMBER 2026

Requirements for panel proposal

  • Panel proposals are encouraged to take inspiration from the conference theme of “Societies Under Stress”.
  • All attendants, including panel convenors, paper presenters, discussants, chairs, and listeners are required to register to the conference once Early bird registration opens, and pay the fees.

The process

  • All proposals must be made via the online form (click on the button at the end of the page).
  • Please include the panel title, a short description (max. 300 characters) and an abstract (max. 250 words).
  • If already known, please add your chair and discussants.
  • On submission of the proposal, the proposing convenor will receive a confirmation emails; other convenors, chairs and discussants will receive emails notifying them of the proposal, requiring them to log in on the website (may require account creation) to confirm their role in the panel. You may wish to alert them to this requirement, in case it goes to spam or they suspect the email is phishing.
  • All submissions must be made before the deadline of 1 December 2026.
  • The Conference Committee will deliberate and respond shortly after this date.
  • A call for papers will be made shortly before the Christmas break.

Formats

Proposals can be made in several different formats:

  • Panel – with up to 4 paper presentations per one 120-minute session. Panels can have up to 2 sessions (max 10 papers).

Accepted panels will be open to proposals during the call for papers at the later stage.

  • Roundtable – at a roundtable a group of scholars (usually no more than 5) discuss themes/issues of general scholarly interest in front of (and subsequently with) an audience for the duration of a single 105-minute session. While a roundtable can include short (5-10 min) provocations/presentations, the main idea is to create a lively debate, not to focus on any one presenter.

All roundtable discussants can be added as discussants to the programme and are also required to register.

  • Workshop – at a workshop, these can be used in a number of ways, from a ethnomusical performance, a piece of dramatic performance through to a book launch or other event that reflects Societies Under Stress.
