Innovation and originality in traditional Oceanic art
Dr Harry Beran
Wednesday 2 April at 5.30 pm
Most survey books on traditional Oceanic art give the impression that this art is timeless — that the range of artworks produced at the time of early contact with the West had always been produced, although it is acknowledged that some types of artworks once made had been discontinued. I will show that, in fact, artistic innovation was widespread in Oceania by giving documented examples of it and by plausible speculation about the nature of this art.
