Max Carocci is a project curator at the British Museum and teaches indigenous arts of the Americas at Birbeck College in the programme World Arts and Artefacts, which he directs since 2008. His previous publications include Ritual and Honour: Warriors of the North American Plains (British Museum Press, 2011); and Native American Indian Adoption, Captivity and Slavery in Changing Contexts (co-edited with Stephanie Pratt; Palgrave, 2011).
A survey of the history of North American Plains Indian warrior societies and their ongoing legacy, Warriors of the Plains examines continuity and change between historic warrior societies and contemporary Native North American military associations. This book also explores the art of North American Plains Indian warriors – weapons, amulets, clothing and ceremonial objects – with particular emphasis on their ritual use and symbolic meanings.
