FESA I is the highest level of Forensic and Expert Social Anthropology certification and is chartered status. A chartered FESA I practitioner has completed a PhD in a relevant social scientific or related field and has undertaken further training and been an active participant in forensic and expert social anthropology work, compliant with the requirements of local Justice systems. Chartered practitioners are entitled to the post-nominal Ch FESA-I.
Applications for FESA I Chartership
Application for FESA I chartership involves an application form, case review, and a viva voce examination. Application normally requires a minimum of three years’ experience after attaining FESA II status including evidence of participation in the activities outlined in the CPD guidance documentation. Direct entry is also possible where the candidate presents a portfolio of evidence in line with these requirements.
The next round of chartership of FESA I practitioners will be in 2026. The submission of application forms and all associated documentation should be made by 28 February 2026.
To apply for FESA I Chartership:
- The applicant must be a Fellow of the RAI. Information on joining the RAI can be found here
- A Level I application form must be completed and submitted along with an up-to-date CV to fac@therai.org.uk
- A portfolio containing evidence of that which is stipulated under section 3 of the Practitioner Levels document must be submitted to fac@therai.org.uk as a single pdf
- The fee for the FESA I examination is £500. Applicants will be invoiced on receipt of application
- Applicants are advised to consult Appendix 12 ‘Guidance to FESA I Candidates’ of the Examination Procedures document
Please note that any files sent should be password protected. Once a candidate’s application and supporting documentation have been passed by two independent examiners, a Viva Voce oral examination will be scheduled.

Recertification
Continuing professional development is a vital part of the chartership process. Chartered FESA I practitioners are advised to consult the CPD document.
Every 5 years after certification, FESA I practitioners are required to:
- Complete the FESA I recertification form and submit it to fac@therai.org.uk
- Submit an up-to-date CV and portfolio containing evidence of that which is stipulated under section 3 of the CPD document to fac@therai.org.uk as a single pdf
- Retain their status as a Fellow of the RAI
- The fee for the FESA I recertification is £50. Applicants will be invoiced on receipt of their application.
